Beyond Grants: Building Strategic Researcher Development Programs to Transform Research Culture

Designing Research for Impact: Applying the Research Impact Canvas

Today's research environment demands a comprehensive approach to researcher development that extends far beyond developing grant literacy. This hands-on workshop is for researcher professionals, who are responsible for developing researchers’ knowledge and skills through development processes. Using examples from various initiatives, approaches to creating learning experiences that develop researchers' capabilities will be presented — from research communication and engagement skills to impact planning and career development. Participants will then consider their local context, reflecting on the cultural, structural, and practical factors shaping the development experiences of their researchers. Then, participants will collaborate to envision a future for the researchers they support where development needs are central to the operation of the research infrastructure. Workshop activities will give participants hands-on experience in program design, while case studies will illustrate how theoretical frameworks translate into practical initiatives. Participants will leave with adaptable strategies for implementing programs and initiatives at their own institutions. This workshop is ideal for research management professionals responsible for researcher development, training program design, and research culture initiatives. It provides practical tools for moving beyond ad-hoc workshops to create strategic development programs that transform research culture and researcher capability.

Researchers and research managers are increasingly required to articulate the impact and translation pathways of proposed research projects from inception and track progress towards real-world adoption. While universities are investing in industry researchers integrate impact and translation planning into their projects from day one. The Research Impact Canvas is a structured approach that enables researchers and research managers to describe the potential pathways for knowledge utilisation and adoption, track progress, and align research outputs with industry and end-user needs. This session will share case studies on how the Canvas has been used to help research teams design for impact, rather than leaving it as an afterthought. Learning Outcomes: • Gain familiarity with the Research Impact Canvas as a practical tool for research design and planning • Learn how to support researchers in defining and communicating pathways for research translation • Learn how to support researchers in developing their strategy for tracking and measuring research outcome throughout a project’s lifecycle.

Project Management

Costing & Pricing of Research

This Master Class has been developed to provide participants with an introduction to the fundamentals of project management, and how these are implemented in a research organisation. The program takes an approach of describing project management activities for research management professionals and also provides information specific for the management of research projects and programs. There are a number of research management roles within organisations who may be required to participate in, or manage projects. Some organisations will have dedicated project management staff, or in some cases a Project Management Office (PMO), however many organisations rely on other staff to design and deliver projects. These projects can range from the implementation of new systems (e.g., grants systems, publications, or analytics systems), new processes (e.g., impact reporting, internal grant processes, costing & pricing policies, and workflows), or the management of research projects or programs. While many research management professionals have relevant qualifications specific to their role, it has previously been challenging to find project management training which takes into consideration the specific requirements of the research environment. Over the past few years, the research management profession has been increasingly seeking project management training opportunities which are specific to the sector and this master class is the first step in addressing these training needs.

An important skillset for any Researcher, Research Administrator, Research Manager, Department Finance Officer or Commercial Manager is to be able to effectively cost and price research projects. With this is in mind the ARMS Costing and Pricing of Research training module has been developed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Research Project Costing and Pricing to ultimately ensure there are enough resources for a project to be successfully completed within the project scope and ensure that key Organisational and Investor requirements have been considered. On completion of the module, the participant will have an increased understanding of: - How the external environment influences costing and pricing; - Key costing and pricing terminology; - The key considerations and elements of effectively costing and pricing a research project; - The principles and components of the full cost of research; - Competitive neutrality and its requirements for costing and pricing; - Medical Trials Costing and Pricing; - Costing and pricing a research project based upon specific funding rounds and funding agency requirements; - Key considerations when costing and pricing a research project in New Zealand, - Singapore and for US Federal Government Grants; - Submitting a compelling funding request; and - Where to get assistance in their Organisation.
